Kogi: Group Urges DSS to Launch Immediate Probe into Yahaya Bello Over Alleged Remarks
Fresh controversy has emerged in Kogi State after a civil society group called on the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to immediately investigate former Governor Yahaya Bello over comments he allegedly made regarding opposition figures in the state.
The advocacy group, Advocacy for Peace, Justice and Order, Say No to Violence in Ebiraland, urged President Bola Tinubu, the DSS, the Nigeria Police Force, and other relevant authorities to examine the former governor's alleged remarks, claiming they could heighten political tension and undermine democratic principles.
According to the group, Bello allegedly encouraged the current Kogi State administration to arrest and prosecute individuals he described as "political criminals." The organisation argued that such statements, if accurately reported, could be interpreted as inflammatory and capable of encouraging political intimidation.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Alhaji O.A. Mamman, the group expressed concern that the alleged comments could threaten civil liberties and the rule of law if left unchecked. It called on security agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the remarks.
The group also referenced previous controversies involving Bello, alleging that similar statements made before the 2023 general elections generated widespread concern among political stakeholders. It argued that public office holders and influential politicians should exercise restraint in their public comments to avoid escalating political tensions.
While demanding an investigation, the organisation stressed that its appeal was aimed at preserving peace and ensuring that all political actors operate within the confines of the law, regardless of party affiliation.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Yahaya Bello nor his representatives had publicly responded to the allegations. Likewise, the DSS and other security agencies had not issued any official statement indicating whether an investigation would be opened.
The latest development comes as political activities in Kogi State continue to intensify ahead of future elections, with analysts urging political leaders across party lines to embrace responsible rhetoric and peaceful engagement.
