El-Rufai Faces Fresh Challenge as ADC Raises Alarm Over Former Kaduna Governor's Ordeal
Fresh concerns have emerged over the situation surrounding former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, after the African Democratic Congress (ADC) issued a strong statement condemning recent developments involving the opposition figure.
The ADC alleged that El-Rufai was denied access to adequate medical care while in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). According to the party, the former governor was taken to the National Hospital in Abuja for treatment after his health reportedly deteriorated, but was allegedly prevented from receiving the recommended medical attention.
In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC further claimed that El-Rufai's wife was assaulted during the incident and that his personal physician was arrested after protesting the situation. The party described the development as a violation of the former governor's fundamental rights and called for immediate respect for due process.
According to the opposition party, medical personnel at the hospital reportedly advised that El-Rufai should be admitted for further treatment because of his condition. However, the ADC alleged that ICPC operatives insisted on returning him to custody instead of allowing him to remain under medical supervision.
The party condemned what it described as the intimidation of El-Rufai's family and legal team, urging the authorities to guarantee his access to medical treatment and ensure that his constitutional rights are protected throughout the ongoing legal process.
The latest development comes months after El-Rufai was charged by the ICPC over allegations of fraud and abuse of office during his tenure as Kaduna State governor. The former governor has consistently denied the allegations, maintaining that the case against him is politically motivated.
The ADC has previously declared El-Rufai a "prisoner of conscience" and repeatedly called for what it describes as a fair and transparent legal process. Party leaders argue that while allegations of corruption should be investigated, every accused person deserves access to legal representation, medical care, and other constitutional protections.
Neither the ICPC nor the Federal Government had publicly responded to the ADC's latest allegations at the time of reporting.
