Nigerian human rights advocate Randy Peter has stirred debate on social media after criticizing the nation's strong dependence on prayer in the face of persistent insecurity, poverty, and governance challenges.
Speaking on an episode of The Honest Bunch podcast, Peter argued that despite many Nigerian politicians publicly associating with churches and mosques, the country continues to grapple with corruption and poor leadership.
According to him, the contradiction raises questions about the effectiveness of religious devotion without accountability and good governance.
“Virtually every politician in Nigeria attends either a church or a mosque. If they all claim to serve God, then who is responsible for looting public funds? Did prayer build China? Did prayer build Russia?” he asked.
Peter maintained that while faith has its place, meaningful national progress depends on responsible leadership, transparency, discipline, and strong institutions rather than prayer alone.
He also pointed to several developed nations that achieved significant economic and technological growth through strategic planning and effective governance, expressing concern over Nigeria’s prolonged security crisis and increasing poverty rate.
Randy further argued that despite decades of intense religious devotion, Nigeria continues to face serious socio-economic and security challenges.
“We have spent the last 65 years praying, yet today Nigeria ranks among the world’s most terrorised nations and remains a major centre of extreme poverty,” he said.
His remarks quickly sparked widespread debate across social media platforms, drawing both support and criticism from Nigerians.
While some users agreed with his view that the country urgently needs accountable leadership, stronger institutions, and practical solutions to its problems, others disagreed with what they perceived as a dismissal of the role of faith and prayer in national development.
Several commenters maintained that prayer and effective governance are not mutually exclusive, arguing that Nigeria’s struggles stem primarily from corruption, poor leadership, and the mismanagement of public resources.
